Joyce was born and educated in San Antonio, Texas. She received her B. S. Degree from Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas. She also attended the University of California at Berkley. Joyce organized the San Antonio Talmud Torah Kindergarten, which she headed for 3 years. She also organized the Kindergarten for the Jewish Educational Association in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rabbi Gruenberger was born in Hungary and wqs educated in Italy and England. He received his Semichah from Rabbi Herz and in the United States he received Semi- chah from the Hebrew Theological Seminary of Chicago, Illinois. Joyce and Rabbi Gruenberger were married in San Antonio, Texas, at the Rodfei Sholom Synagogue on July 15, 1951. Joyce is the daughter of Diana and Clem J. Smith, and the granddaughter of Esther Dalkowitz and the late Zavell Dalkowitz, and the late Sam and Fannie Smith. Rabbi Gruenberger is the son of the Reverend Solomon and Ethel Gruenberger.
