HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION OF SAN ANTONIO Changing Lives while Building Community one interest-free, no-fee loan at a time since 1924 2025 IMPACT REPORT
1924-2024
SHARING the LIGHT
In 1924, at a time of fear and exclusion, members of San Antonio’s Jewish community came together to offer strength, compassion, and a hand up to those struggling to find their footing. They built the Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Antonio — a legacy of dignity and shared responsibility that continues to shine more than a century later. Today, as families and individuals across our community face new financial hardships — some newly challenged, others already fragile — your partnership makes all the difference. In the shadow of the recent government shutdown and its lasting impact, you give people a reason to believe in the power of community once again. Every loan we provide, interest-free and rooted in trust, carries with it your compassion. You help families stay in their homes, students continue their education, and small businesses survive hard times. Together, we’re keeping alive the values that define us — hope, responsibility, and unwavering care for one another. As we embark on 2026, you can keep the light of compassion, strength, and resilience shining brightly in the year ahead. Please make your tax-deductible gift now and ensure that our shared legacy of hope continues into the next century.
With warmest wishes and gratitude, Howard S. Feinberg CEO, Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Antonio

We thank you for your 2025 donations totaling $114,506 from 64 households and organizations.
The parent of a young daughter could make early childhood Jewish education possible; now they’re all joyfully singing the Alef-Bet. A neighbor on disability income covered food needs after other revenue sources ran out. An individual managed unexpected bills and regained financial stability while maintaining his dignity. A student was able to enter Medical School. A neighbor was able to repair his tractor. A community member paid off a high-interest loan. Every loan is a lifeline. Every gift ensures more loan applications are funded. Because of you, dignity and hope are possible.

"This book is living history of Jewish people and events in the San Antonio area. Pages are donated in honor of or in memory of loved ones and their contribution to the Jewish community. We find records of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, marriages, births, elections to various Jewish organizations, and other achievements. It is both a written and photographic history. It is how we recognize a person's good deeds." (from HFLA-SA Diamond Jubilee, 1999)

It has truly been quite a journey. For those who may not know my story, I first came to HFLA SA as a borrower. My children also benefited as borrowers to help support their college education and avoid student debt. Because of this, HFLA-SA holds a deeply personal and meaningful place in my heart. My involvement began over 15 years ago as a non-voting board member, as I still had an active loan. Once my loan was fully paid, I became a voting member, later served on the Executive Committee as VP of Development, and eventually had the privilege of serving as Board President. These last three years as president have been an honor. When I joined the board all those years ago, HFLA-SA's total assets were under $300,000, and few people in the community even knew who we were. We worked hard to raise awareness within the San Antonio Jewish community, but lending activity was minimal—maybe 8–10 loans a year. Then momentum began to build. In 2017, we hosted our first gala in many years. The word began to spread. We followed with our community picnic in 2018–2019, which brought even more visibility. Loans increased to over 20 per year, and assets grew past $300,000. From there, we made a strategic decision to invest in the agency and grow to the next level. We brought on Howard Feinberg as CEO and Kendra Barnes as Administrator. As President, I had the privilege of working closely with Howard and Kendra to develop a strategic plan and chart a long-term vision—work that became one of my proudest achievements. Together with our dedicated lay leaders and professional team, we leveraged HFLA-SA’s 100th anniversary as a springboard for growth. And in 2024, our assets surpassed $1 million. An extraordinary milestone and a testament to the passion of our team and the generosity of our community. We are a close, committed group who truly enjoy working alongside one another. We have fun, we challenge each other, and we respect each other deeply. I leave every board meeting and event inspired and grateful. The work we do matters. There is no other organization in San Antonio doing what we do, and the stories of our borrowers remind me every day why we continue this mission—one loan at a time.

As I transition out of the role of President, I want to sincerely thank the board, the Executive Committee, and Howard and Kendra for your partnership and unwavering support. Everything we have accomplished has been because of our shared dedication. I am excited for what lies ahead. With Mike Kelne stepping in as incoming President, and with this incredible board and leadership team behind him, I know HFLA-SA will continue to thrive and serve our community with impact and purpose. Here’s to the next 100 years—and to continue to lift lives and strengthen our community one loan at a time. I am humbled by what we have achieved together, and grateful to all of you who have helped us reach this moment. With appreciation,
Jeff Siegel Immediate Past President

To Members of San Antonio’s Jewish Community, As we begin the new year, one thing is certain and that’s uncertainty. No one knows what will happen with jobs, prices or many other things that we used to regard as stable and reliable. When paychecks are interrupted due to job loss or shutdowns, or when we face unbudgeted home or car repairs or medical bills, people often need a temporary financial helping hand. That’s where Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Antonio can help with no-interest, no-fee loans. We’ve been doing this since 1924, and the need in our community continues to grow. You can see details of this growth throughout this report. It's the responsibility of HFLA-SA’s leadership to grow the resources needed to meet this growing need. We will do this not only with fundraising efforts, such as our annual picnic with the JCC (slated for Sunday, May 17, 2026) and periodic appeals, but also by operating ethically, efficiently and confidentially to be worthy of our community’s support. There are still many in San Antonio’s Jewish community who don’t know HFLA-SA and what we do, so education will also be a focus. We hope to reach the point that when members of San Antonio’s Jewish community need financial help they will automatically think of HFLA and reach out to us. Your help in raising awareness of who we are and what we do will be key to people getting the financial helping hand they need. Tell your family; tell your friends. Thank you for your continued support and may we all have a healthy and meaningful year.
