Our sages said, "No one is accompanied to his resting place by gold and silver or by precious stones but by Torah, wistom and by acts of good deeds." Truly, "Torah, knowledge and good deeds" accompanied Rabbi Solomon when he departed from this earthly life. His knowledge of the Bible and the Talmud, their interpretations and translations, were deeply engraved in his heart and mind. Words of wisdom flowed from his lips, and those who heard him speak the word of God, enjoyed it greatly. Rabbi Solomon was not only a Shochet, Mohel and teacher, but also a leader of the San Antonio Jewish Community for three decades. He was humble in his ways and friendly to all, his doors were always open to the needy and the stranger, for he truly observed the Command of "Hachnosas Orchim," and received all men with a pleasant countenance. For eighteen years Rabbi Solomon was the Rabbi of the old Agudas Achim Congregation, and for eight years Rabbi of the Rodfei Sholom B'nai Israel Congregation. A pioneer of the Hebrew Free Loan Associa tion, he was, in all, a great Prince in Israel. May his memory be blessed, and may his soul enjoy eternal l i fe . Rabbi Solomon gave charity both openly and secretly to the poor and needy.

On this page of the Book of Reminiscences is brief ly inscribed the history of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham II. Kamra. s, and of their good deeds and contributions to wards the welfare of our Jewish Community. Mr. AERAIIAM KAMRASS came to San Antonio almost two decades ago, and established himself here. Though he worked hard to support his family and build up his business, he found enough time to take a hand in community life. In 1924, realizing the necessity of a Hebrew Free Loan in our Jewish Community, Mr. Kam- rass immediately called upon a few of his friends, con vincing them of the need of such an organization. Dif ficult was that task, and he encountered many obstacles on his way. Some charitable institutions were against his idea and tried to discourage him, but his heart felt the great need of such an organization as the Gmilus Chasodjm; and through his efforts and ceaseless work, Mr. KAMRASS succeeded in organizing the Hebrew Free Loan. Only a handful of men joined him in his undertaking and within a short time 70 members joined. Mr. KAM RASS devoted a great deal of his time toward that good ■cause and under his leadership as President for 12 years the H. F. L. increased in membership and became known as the most outstanding organization in our Jew ish Community. As honorary president now, he still at tends meetings and keeps up the spirit to do and help. Mr. KAMRASS was also president of the Rodfe Sholom Congregation for 5 years and carried out his plans and fulfilled his duties successfully. He organized a Hebrew School and worked for the good cause earnestly. He also saw the necessity of beautifying the Cemetery and fixing in all things needed there. Mrs KAMRASS has helped him in every way and patiently carried the burden of bringing up their children in a Jewish spirit. Mr. and Mrs. KAMRASS truly deserve that their names and good deeds should be inscribed in the Safer Hazicoron to which they contributed morally and mater ially.

Mr. Henkin, a resident of San Antonio for many years, was born in Ukraine, Russia, left his home town when a young man, came to the United States by way of Siberia, and settled in the city of Chicago. After residing in Chicago for twenty years, Mr. Henkin tired of that city, and decided to come to San Antonio to make his home. Having established permanent residence in our city, he lost no time in becoming an active participant in various Jewish organizations, giving much of his personal time to the furtherance of these organizations. He is a long standing member of the Hebrew Free Loan Association, Jewish Community Center, and Agudas Achim Congregation. Mr. Henkin is the proud father of a daughter and a son, a physician of prominence in Detroit, and six grandchildren, three grandsons and three granddaughters. In dedicating this page to the Hebrew Free Loan Association, it is Mr. Henkin’s sincere wish that the Association shall continue to grow with each passing year, so that it may be privileged to perform even greater service to our Jewish community in the years of the future. Dedicated this 27th day of March, 1968. Dedicated this 27th day of March, 1968. This Page is Dedicated To Beloved Parents By Devoted Children ‘And for all who busy themselves with the needs of the com munity and rebuilding of Eretz Yisroel, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will give them His reward.” The passage from our Sabbath liturgy eptomizes the life of our beloved parents, Leah and Jake Herschman. Ever in the vanguard of every Jewish activity in San Antonio, these two have exemplified the highest ideals of the individual Jew, lending their means, their time and their efforts to any and every cause that adds brilliance to the diadem of a noble Jewish name. They have been members of decades’ standing of the Agudas Achim and Rodfei Sholom Congregations, their Sisterhoods, of B’nai B'rith and Hadassah. Long before the State of Israel became a reality and Zionism was but an idealist’s dream, Leah and Jacob Herschman were American Chalutzim working conscientiously and diligently for the Mizrachi, Poale Mizrachi and the Poale Zion organizations. Leah Herschman was one of the charter members and a president for twelve years of the Pioneer Women's Organization. Recognizing especially the needs of the aged, "Laike” as she is affectionately called, can be seen working, striving, urging others to assist in the building of this needy project in San Antonio. Jacob Herschman, demonstrating more than a passive interest in the dictum that “These are the commandments which are without limitation" — among them "Gemilns Chasadim”, has devoted his energies and his talents to the Hebrew Free Loan Association and his conscientious devotion has been rewarded with the presidency of that organization. Together these two have carved a niche of immortality by their Maasim Tovim, visiting the sick, comforting the bereaved, tending to the needy. Their home has been open to all in the truly literal sense of the word. No guest for the Shabbat or Yom Tov was ever turned away; no act of goodness delayed, no Mitzvah knowingly neglected. For such exemplary parents, humbly, lovingly and with pride, we their children pray that God grant them many years of life and health, filled with unclouded bliss. MR. AND MRS. JEROME KERMAN MR. DEDICATED THIS 16th DAY OF MARCH, 1969 THIS PAGE DEDICATED TO Isadore Hershman It is said that our names have an influence on our personalities. For no man has this been so appropriate as for the man whom this page is meant to memorialize. Isadore "Itzik” Hershman died on January 17, 1983. His Hebrew name was Yitzchok — from the word Zohok — laughter and this was his hallmark. He was born with a unique gift, the capacity to make others laugh. He was born 50 years ahead of his time. He had a wealth of comic material stored in his memory bank that would be the envy of the most famous comedians of our day. He was a Yiddish raconteur without peer. He had a fund of stories that befitted every occasion and every incident and every personality. He was the Eddie Cantor . . . the Henny Youngman . . . the Johnny Carson . . . the Alan King of his Yiddish speaking family and circle of friends. He was a funny, funny man. His command of the Yiddish language was perfectly suited for his humor and with it he brought joy to everyone who could understand the language. While he was a man without formal education and couldn’t speak English fluently, he had the gift of bringing cheer and laughter wherever he came. He had a profound respect for people of learning and education, approach ing a sense of awe in their presence. He belonged to Congregation Agudas Achim, B’nai B’rith and he was an ardent supporter of the Hebrew Free Loan Association of San Antonio. With him an age has passed........... "May his soul be bound up in the bonds of Eternal Life.” JlQKl “ion “ptys V n ThisPage is Dedicated in the Memory of Mr. Sam Jacobs by tbe executors of bis estate Mr. Bernard Kanter and Mr. Dan Levine "Serve the Lord with joy; come before Him with singing" The original members of the Agudas Achim Choir which was organized by the late Cantor David Kanter in 1915 were Charles M. Lee, Mrs. Nathan Nevelow, Abe Rabinowitz and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sugarman. The Choir assisted at the High Holiday services and on special occasions. After the flood of September, 1921, when services could not be continued at Old Synagogue (corner Aubrey and Builbeau Streets) they were conducted at the Hebrew Institute. At this time late Friday night services were initiated and the Choir became an integral part of the services. The members then were Louis Arbetter, Ida Brenner, Rose Solomon Bernard, Fanny Milgram Dodic, Hyman Eiderberg, Idella Adelman Fox, Sam Jacobs, Celia Kaliff, Charles M. Lee, Jeanette Levytansky, Esther Lapidus Nevelow, Abe Rabinowitz and Tillie Brown Sondock. For some years after the completion of the New Synagogue on Main and Quincy Streets to the present time the membership varied, as new people joined and others dropped out. Among those who joined were Bernard and Pinney Kanter, Celia Levis, Arthur Neuman and Paul Racusin, and Hyman Be clear. The Choir was invited to sing in many parts of Texas and in Mexico, and partici pated in the dedication of Synagogues in Austin, Corpus Christi and in Monterrey. During the World Wars the Choir sang liturgical music to the men at many military installations. Sometimes the weather made the roads so bad that the women had to be carried from the cars to the buildings. After the death of Cantor Kanter the Choir continued to serve the Synagogue without a director. Of the present Choir, two members have a record of over 35 years' service—Mrs. N. Nevelow and Mrs. J. Dodic. Arthur Neuman and Bernard Kanter have served over 20 years. Mr. Sam Jacobs served over 35 years, until his death in May, 1956. Since 1948 Emanuel J. Barkan has been the Cantor of Agudas Achim and his Choir now consists of twelve. Four are “veterans”—Fanny Dodic, Bernard Kanter, Arthur Neuman and Esther Nevelow. The other eight are: David Goldwasser, Ann Horn, Sidney Kempler, Burton Klayman, Celia Levis, Esther Shearer, Fanny Smith and Marsha Weiner. The first time he “davened" before a congregation as "hazzan" Emanuel J. Barkan had to stand up on a stool to see into the "Sidur" and to be seen by the congregation. He was eleven years old and had already left home to serve as choir singer for the then famous Cantor Kilimnick in Kishinev. Even before his Bar Mitzvah he had travelled over Bassarabia and Ukraine under the supervision of a manager. Cantor Barkan began his formal musical studies in Kishinev. In 1922 he came to the United States where he continued his studies of voice, harmony and composi tion in Boston and in Philadelphia. He was affiliated with Congregation Beth Am in Philadelphia, with the Jewish Center of Miami Beach and with Congregation Kehillath Israel of Brookline, Mass. In New York and in Philadelphia Cantor Barkan was almost as popular as con cert artist and radio singer as he was in his own profession. Through the years, especially during the war years, he has always been ready and eager to sing for service men at their posts and in the hospitals. That every Jewish cause is dear to him and that he is always ready to serve in common knowledge. Cantor Barkan is known as a composer, having published both religious and secular compositions. T his P age I s D edicated I n L oving M emory of Miss Esther Frieda Lampert BY MR. ABRAHAM LAMPERT AND FAMILY. Miss Lampert, a Jewish woman of unassuming and friendly character, who loved people, spent most of her adulthood life making friends. She was never one to seek community honors, but rather, was con tented to be a respected member of the San Antonio Jewish community. However, she did take time to deviate from her uneventful mode of daily living to affiliate and support such Jewish community organizations as the San Antonio Chapter of Hadassah and the Agudas Achim Con gregation. In her death, she leaves to her dear brother and family, of nieces and nephews, the fond remembrance of having lived an exemplary life as a respected Jewess of our San Antonio Jewish community. May her soul rest in Eternal Peace. Born July 7, 1896 Died February 2, 1970. DEDICATED THIS 21st DAY OF MARCH, 1971 This Page is Dedicated By The HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION To MR. T. C. LEVINE In grateful recognition of his decade of faithful service to the Association, both as a member of the Board of Trustees and as its president during the years 1958 and 1959. Tommy, as he is best known by his many friends and fellow organization workers, first became acquainted with the inner workings of our Association in the year of 1952 when he was elected a member of the Association Board of Trustees, and it was only a matter of time until he became actively engaged in the functions of the Associa tion by his ready acceptance of several important committee chair manships. It was because of his superior direction and personal efforts, while serving as chairman of the Membership Committee, in the year 1956, that the Association was able to establish a new all time paid membership record that year. And it was the readiness with which he accepted various and difficult committee assignments as well as his willingness to assist others in the fulfillment of theirs, that not only won him much praise and respect from his fellow officers, but also the presidency of the Association in the year 1958. And it was because of his inspiring leadership, while serving as Association president during the years of 1958 and 1959 that the Association enjoyed two of its most successful years of existence. Not only has Tommy built an enviable reputation for himself as an “organization worker extraordinary" in our Association, by the countless hours of devoted service put forth by him in behalf of the Association, but he has also broadened this reputation to other organizations, and resulting in his being the recipient of justly deserved service awards from the Agudas Achim Synagogue, the San Antonio Jewish Community Center, and the Texas State Zionist organization. Because of these many attributes and in sincere appreciation of a "job well done”, the HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION is proud to dedicate this page to Tommy with the expressed wish that God will bless him with many more years of good health, so that he may be able to continue with the fulfillment of one of his greatest desires in life, "that of serving his beloved Jewish faith and fellow man".
