This book is a living history of Jewish people and life cycle events in the San Antonio area. Pages in this book are donated in honor of or in memory of loved ones and their contribution to the Jewish community. We find records of Bar and Bat Mitzvah, marriages, births, election to offices in various Jewish organizationas well as other achievements. It has both a written and a photographic history. It is also a way of recognizing a person's accomplishments and good deeds. Many of us can look with pride upon the pages of our ancestors. Pages can be purchased by contacting the Chairman of the Book of Reminiscences. The books will be on display at the new Jewish Campus soon.

Israel Alexander This Page is Inscribed in This Book of Reminiscenses (Sefer Hazikoron) by Mr. Israel Alexander, as a Contribution to the Welfare of the Hebrew Free Loan of San Antonio

Mr. Alexander was born in Britchan, Bessarabia, Russia, on the 7th day of Adar, 5632 (1872). He ar rived in the United States in 1921, and became a mem ber of Congregation of Rodfei Sholom on arriving in this city. He has been a member of the Hebrew Free Loan since its organization. Mr. Alexander and his en tire family reside in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Abraham D. Al+erman was one of the pioneers of our Jewish Community. During the forty years of his life in our midst he was active in Jewish affairs and has taken a great deal of interest in the upbuilding of our institutions. Mr. Alterman was one of the first members of Congregation Agudas Achim, and he contributed liberally to

wards its maintenance. He belonged to many other charitable organizations and gave aid to every worthy cause. To perpetuate his memory Mrs. A. Alterman has dedicated this page of the Sefer Hazicoron to inscribe the name and good deeds of her husband, Abraham David, who passed to the world beyond November 6, 1924.

in Grateful Recognition of His Ten Years of Outstanding Service as a Member of its Board of Trustees

Mr. Bankler first became acquainted with the workings of our Association when he was selected to fill the Board vacancy created by the death of his father, I. Bankler, a trustee of many years standing, in May of 1950. It was only a short time after his appointment to the Board of Trustees that Mr. Bankler was selected to chairman the Association’s picnic committee of that year. So successful did this picnic prove to be, under his supervision, that he was consistently reappointed to this post with each passing year since that time. It was under Mr. Bankler's capable leadership, as picnic commit tee chairman, that the Association has enjoyed the most successful picnics, of the many it has given in the past quarter of a century. It is in recognition of this outstanding service record, that the Hebrew Free Loan Association is proud to honor Mr. Bankler with this page and express the hope, that he will continue to serve our worthy Association with the same capable leadership in the many years to come, that he has in his ten years just concluded.

Israel and Rose Barenblat were married in San Antonio, Texas, September 10th, 1933, and are still residing in this city. Mr. and Mrs. I. Barenblat are very active in this Jewish Community and are participating in the local and national organizations. They are members of the Rodfei Sholom and Agudas Achim Congregations of this city. Mr. Israel Barenblat is president of the San Antonio Hebrew Free Loan Association for the last four years. This token is given in the honor of the Silver Wedding Anniver sary of Mr. and Mrs. I. Barenblat, and in appreciation of the Jewish training and the warm home environment they have provided their children. May God bless our dear parents with a long life, and with many healthy and happy years, so that they may be with us and continue with their good deeds.

of 1956 to August, 1958

Mr. Barenblatt, a comparative newcomer to Association activities, was elected to the position of Association Trustee in the year 1948 and after having served in this capacity for eight consecutive years, was elevated to the position of Association president in August of 1956, a position which he held until August of 1958. The sincere and devoted manner with which he discharged his many presidential duties and responsibilities, was cause for much praise and favorable comment from fellow Association officers. Not only did he distribute Association function assignments, with above average efficiency, and many times in full neglect of his own pressing business problems, but he would also personally participate and often take the lead, in the fulfillment of these same assignments. Because of Mr. Barenblatt's efficient and inspiring leadership, the Association was able to increase its loaning capital by a sizeable amount and also give several outstanding social events that greatly enhanced its position as a leader among the Jewish organizations of San Antonio. It is in recognition of these outstanding attributes of Mr. Barenblatt, that the Hebrew Free Loan Association is pleased to honor him with this page, whereon these attributes will be permanently recorded, for viewing by himself and others, in the years to come.

Hyman Becker

By His Devoted Wife Marilyn, Son Sheldon, and Daughter Susan

Hyman Becker was born July 23, 1914, in Chicago, Illinois, and died April 1, 1956, in San Antonio, Texas. He married Merilyn Pinsky in 1940, and they have two children, a son, Sheldon, born in 1942, and a daughter, Susan, born in 1945. Mr. Becker was engaged in the wholesale ladies ready-to-wear gar ments, the Pan-American Fashions, at 428 W. Market Street, San Antonio, Texas. Hyman Becker was the son of Isaac and Sarah Becker of Chicago, Illi nois. He was a member of the Agudas Achim Congregation, and of its choir for 9 years. He was a great lover of the arts, and a member of the San Antonio Opera Company for five years. He was also a great lover of the sciences of chemistry, astronomy, physics and botany.

Born 1914. Died 1956. In Hebrew 20th of Nisan, 5716.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence D. Mazer are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter Sally Ann to Lawrence Bell, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Bell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 13 , 2001 . The wedding ceremony was held at Congregation Rodfei Sholom with Rabbi Aryeh Sheinberg, Cantor David Silverstein, Rabbi Chaim Block and Rabbi Moshe Unger officiating. The traditional orthodox rituals were observed. A contingent of friends of the groom from the Orthodox community of Philadel phia led the traditional dancing and singing. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at Congregation Agudas Achiim. The bride is a graduate of Boston University, Beit Berl Teachers College in Israel, and received a Master's Degree from the Uni versity of Texas at San Antonio in Bi-lingual Bi-Cultural Stud ies. The groom is a graduate of Temple University. The couple is at home in Philadelphia.

This page is dedicated to the memory of LOUIS BERKIE

Louis Berkie was a San Antonio institution. He was known as "Mr. Wooden Nickels’1.

For many years he depended on the Hebrew Free Loan to keep his business afloat. When he became financially able, he turned to the Hebrew Free Loan to help him repay his "debt" and find others whom he could assist. He was intimatelly acquainted with so many of the Jewish population that he was asked to sit on the Loan & Collection Committee, where he served for many years. His two main items of merchandise were wooden nickels and magi* cians supplies. He was very generous. Magicians in need could always go to Berkie for help. Berkie was singled out for special honors at their conventions and shows in 1983, 1987, and 1996. He was an ameteur magician and had a special kit for entertaining chil dren regularly in the hospitals. San Antonio has been diminished by his death.

There wasn’t anything she could not do, from making her hus band feel seven feet tall, to fixing a child's favorite doll. Her hand and a prayer on a feverish brow, made you feel well in no time at all. So, as we recite the “Shemah", which she taught us to do, we shall ever give thanks to “You” for the most wonderful “Queen of them all”, our “Esther”. Amen. Loved and sadly missed by her husband Martin, children Sidney, Melvin, Marian, and Harold, and grandchildren. Born July 8, 1893 — Died January 5, 1961. “May Her Soul Rest In Peace.”

Jacob H. Bogoslow

Jacob H. Bogoslow was born in Cherkass, Kiev, Russia, on April 15th, 1891. Chaim and Sarah Bogoslow were his parents. May their souls be in repose.

Jacob H. Bogoslow arrived in the United States in 1914. He became a resident of San Antonio in the year of 1917. His family consists of three nephews and a niece, who reside in Philadelphia, Pa.

Mr. Jacob H. Bogoslow has been a member of B’nai B’rith for more than 27 years, a member of Zionist Organization of America for more than 40 years and is a member of the Jewish Community Center. He also was affiliated with Congregation Agudas Achim and many other organi zations. He also has contributed large sums of money to the Jewish National Fund, which is very dear to his heart, and many other worthy Jewish causes. He also is a purchaser of Israel Bonds.

Since his retirement, after 40 years in the mercantile business, he has been active in organizational work.

Remember us, O Lord our God, for our well-being; be mindful of us for blessings, spare us and be gracious unto us. May thy loving kind ness follow us and be a comfort to us for all of our days.

Born in Druya, Russia, tfie son of Jacob and Dora Borschow. Educated in the Yeshiva and later completed his training as a shochet. Came to this country in 1897. A devoted Biblical scholar, Mr. Borschow was an authority on the Torah, Talmud, and the various books of commentary. He was also a poet, composing poetry in both Yiddish and English. His favorite author was Emerson; his chief interest, human ity; and his favorite motto: "Honesty is the best policy."

He was a charter member of the Hebrew Free Loan Association, a member of Temple

Beth-EI and the Zionist Organization of America.

He is survived by his widow, Rebecca Lazerowitz Borschow; daughters, Mrs. Nate Chodorow, Waco; Mrs. Ben Straus, Dallas; Mrs. Sol Hoffman, Mrs. Philip Werbner, and Mrs. Sara Borschow, all of San Antonio; son, Sidney Borschow of San Juan, Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

SAM BRISKMAN NO GREATER DEED CAN BE DONE TO A BELOVED WIFE WHO PAST AWAY TO THE GREAT BEYOND THAN THE PERPETUATION OF HER BELOVED MEMORY. Mrs. Zelda Briskman lived a true jewish righteous life. She was humble in her ways as was becoming a true jewish wife and mother. Mrs. Briskman belonged to several jewish organizations and contributed generously to every one of them. Mrs. Zelda Briskman believed in the virtue of “TZODOKOH BASESER,” giving charity secretly, and that was her wish to carry out after her departure from this Earthly Life. Her name will be remembered by the Hebrew Free Loan as she remembered the Hebrew Free Loan Association in her will with a most generous contribution. Hebrew Free Loan Association are inscribed the good deeds and the worthy accomplishments of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Brisk-

man.

Mr. and Mrs. Briskman came to San Antonio in 1914 and made their home here. Since they have established them selves in this city, they have always taken a pert in the up building of this Jewish community. They have contributed and are now aiding every good Jewish cause. Mr. and Mrs. Briskman are giving charity with cn open hand. They uphold the Jewish traditions and a Jewish spirit prevails in their home. They brought up their two daughters, Gertrude end Hellen, in a Jewish spirit. Mr. and Mrs. Brisk man belong to several Jewish organizations, they are mem bers of Cong. Agudas Achim Bnai Brith Lodge, Hebrew Free Loan Ass'n and other worthy organizations. They truly deserve that their names be inscribed in this Sefer Hazicoron, Bock of Reminiscences.

in commemoration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Brown, who were born in different sections of Poland, emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, in the early part of the present century where they had the good fortune to become acquainted with each other. Following their meeting and a brief courtship, they became engaged, and were married on September 10th, 1910, in the nearby city of Rockford, Illinois. Following their marriage, they returned to Chicago to make their home and remained there until the year of 1944, when they decided to move to San Antonio to take up residence and have resided here to this day. Mr. and Mrs. Brown, since making their home in our city, have found sufficient time from their busy schedule of business and house hold duties to affiliate with, and participate in, various local Jewish organizations. Mr. Brown, who has just recently retired from active business, lists affiliations with such organizations as B'nai B’rith, San Antonio Zionist organization, Golden Manor organization and the Agudas Achim Synagogue. Mrs. Brown is active in the local chapters of Sr. Fladassah, B'nai B'rith Women, Council of Jewish Women, and the Agudas Achim Sisterhood. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are the proud parents of two sons, Ben and Leo, living with their families in Chicago, and one daughter, Sylvia, married to Bernard Kanter of our city, and seven grandchildren, Teddie and Debbie Brown, Monette and Joe J. Brown, Jay Allen and Ray David Kanter, and Zona Beth Kanter Pigeon, and one grand son, Barry Pigeon. It is the wish of the many relatives and friends of this esteemed couple, who join with them in the commemoration of this great event, that the happiness that has blessed their marriage for the past fifty years, shall be multiplied many times over, in the next fifty years to come.

Aaron’s term of service had its beginning in the year 1959 when he was selected from the general membership ranks to serve as a member of the Association Board of Trustees. After having served with distinction, as chairman of various Asso ciation committees, for a number of years, Sonny, as he is affectionately called by his relatives and friends, was rewarded with the high office of Association President in the years 1967 and 1968. Because of his energetic leadership and dedicated devotion to his presidential duties, the Association recorded two additional years of progress to its ever growing years of progress. Sonny is married to the lovely Idella Cohen Charles and their mar riage has been blessed with three adorable childern, daughters Janet and Debbie and son Ronald, who have inherited the distinctive leadership qualities of their parents. The Association is proud to present Sonny this page with the ex pressed hope, that it will provide him and his family a tangible source of fond reflection of the years of personal service he has so willingly given our Association.

For 35 years their marriage was filled with an over abundance of warmth and love for each other and their children. Their loving memory will live forever in our hearts.

To have a son and be able to watch him grow into a fine young man is a blessing. Our son Ronald Alan Charles was called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August 7,1976 at Congregation Rodfei Sholom, San Antonio, Texas. This page is dedicated to you, Ronald. Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Charninsky came to San Antonio in 1929 and have since taken a great interest in the welfare of our Jewish community.

They belong to and help every Jewish organization materially and morally.

Mr. Charninsky is a member of Temple Beth-EI and Congregation Agudas Achim and is serving as a member of the Board for several years. He is a member of the Hebrew Free Loan, Zionist organization, Talmud Torah, Community Center and many other organizations of this city. Mr. Charninsky gives his time and effort to charitable organizations. He serves as representative of the Variety Club which is a charity organization.

Mrs. Anna Colien by her Daughter and Son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. I. Barenblatt to thank her for the many years of unselfish devotion to our family

Mrs. Anna Cohen was born in Krasnopol, Poland; spent her youth there and married Mr. Meyer Wolf Dziwak, also of the same town. Upon migrating to the United States the name of Dziwak was changed to Cohen because of the “Cohanim" heritage to which the family belonged. This remarkable woman widowed in 1919, raised eight children in Krasnopol, Poland in a true Jewish traditional manner and managed against untold hardships to keep the family together and to instill in each of the children a sense of responsibility toward each other. Realizing the uncertainty of life in Poland, she allowed two of the oldest to migrate to the United States. Later at her insistence and her son’s efforts two others were sent to Mexico and consequently also entered the United States. In 1936 after many years of divided family life her son succeeded in bringing her and the remaining four children to San Antonio, Texas. One of her basic principles is that charity is a necessity and not a luxury. At the risk of self denial, Mrs. Anna Cohen has many times contributed to worthy causes far beyond her means. Today this worthy woman counts among her blessings 16 grand children and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ida Fannie Cohen was the wife of Meyer Cohen, and mother of David Cohen and Dorothy Riemer of San Antonio, and Cipora Lidsky of Houston, Texas. Mrs. Cohen was born in Minsk, Russia, in October, 1899, She first settled in St. Louis Mo., and came to San Antonio, in 1908, where she married Meyer Cohen. She was very active in the Mizrachi Organization and the Ladies Auxiliary of Rodfei Sholom Congregation, and other Jewish Organizations in San Antonio, Texas. Ida Fannie Cohen died in January 24, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas.

The world lost a self made man who lived his life the way he thought it was meant to be lived. Harry Cohen was a devoted religious man who carried the law of the Lord above all else. He was a tireless contributor for all worth while organizations & causes, never was a needy person turned away. His humor & attitude were unique & everyone was considered a friend. The Hebrew Free Loan will miss this tireless, devoted, & loved man. For over 50 years Harry Cohen contributed of himself & his money for this wonderful organization. His life has been completed, an era has ended, we love you in death as we did in life. Rest in peace.

tbe Association, botb as a member of its Board of

Trustees and as its Treasurer

Mr. Cohen's long period of service with the Association, had its beginning in the year of 1926 when he was first elected as a member of its Board of Trustees, and after having served in this capacity for six years, was elevated to the position of Association treasurer, a position which he now holds, and has continuously held, for the past twenty six years. It must be said of Mr. Cohen, that because of his overwhelming generosity in providing the Association with office space, in his business establishment, free of rent, all these years, that he is individually responsible in building up the Association’s capital by many thousands of dollars. So intensely devoted was Mr. Cohen to the Association and his duties as treasurer, that he would often set aside and neglect his own store business to take care of less important Association business. Mr. Cohen, has, by the cordial and sincere manner with which he has performed his duties as Association treasurer, so popularized himself with all who have been privileged to have contact with him, that they have consistently returned him to his treasurer’s office, by unanimous vote, year after year. It is because of his long and devoted period of service to the Asso ciation and the personal attributes mentioned, that the Association is proud to present to Mr. Cohen this page, with the expressed wish, that God will continue to bless him with the good health and full strength, necessary, for him to continue serving his beloved Hebrew Free Loan, in the years that lie ahead.
